I've been here 3 years, and I have to say, I agree with Rev. Bob Baril 100%

But it's not that it attracts "low-class" people so much as it attracts alcoholics and gambling junkies. I think both types of people need help, especially the alcoholics, because they are on the way to an early grave.

And I don't just hop in and out of the Downtown area, I live here. I think the quality of life sucks because it's easy to write off such an area when it's filled with such people who don't want to help themselves and there's little to no real sense of community down here.

I don't see much in the head way of making it more "beautiful" or "urban renewal," but I wish there would be some of that.

Oh well, what do I know? I'm lower middle class, work my behind off and I hope for more than just restaurants to sustain down here.

I agree that Star House has good food. They deliver, too, so we often have them deliver lunch to work.

Back in the 1980s, the Sampan had pretty good Chinese food. Its quality has gone down over the past 10 years and especially over the past 3-4 years. Now, for a GOOD downtown Chinese restaurant, check out the Star House on Route 135 across from St. T's. I think the Star House's prices are maybe a tad higher than I'd like but the food is OUTSTANDING. When I go into the Sampan to take out food, about once a month, I always think of Chef Gordon Ramsay's "Kitchen Nightmares". "Chet" who (I think) is the Sampan owner is a very nice and personable guy, but I think he's given up. The Sampan has become a bar and Keno parlor (which attracts a very lower class element) that happens to serve some Chinese food. I can just hear Gordon Ramsay (in his British accent) saying to Chet, "You've forgotten your MISSION!" I'd like to see somebody buy the Sampan and EMPHASIZE the FOOD and make it GOOD FOOD. Get rid of the Keno and the people who play it for hours. If they want to serve alcohol, fine, but DOWNPLAY the bar and emphasize the FOOD. Whoever buys it should take a walk over to Star House to see how it could be done.

I haven't gone there, either, but I think it's too bad to see more empty store fronts downtown.
