I too was a former employee who went to work for a supplier. The whole industry is in the doldrums due to the WalMart effect on suppliers and changing consumer habits. The younger generations (myself included) just don't have the leisure time to sew clothing for our children, especially when we can buy it for so much less, or work on home sewing projects, or create knitted garments from scratch. I will always remember my 7 years working for the company in the Warwick, Cromwell and Woburn stores and my second, two year tour as an assistant buyer. A truly great company with great owners and staff! All will be missed!

Carol,
The original name of the Fabric Place was Sportswear for Juniors. It sold clothes on the first floor; fabrics were on the second. Eventually the fabrics took over. I used to buy fabric there for my junior high sewing projects, back when all girls had to take home ec. We always called the place "Sportswear," even after the name changed. I don't think there were any branches back then. What a shame that it's closed down.

Loved the store. Amazing Home dec, quilting, wonderful designer remnants. Huge selection in special occasion needs. Far above and beyond any other fabric store in the US.
I often drove an hour to go there. Now living in NC and plan to make a mother of the groom outfit. I was comforted knowing I could get to CT or RI "The Fabric Place" to find something beautiful. To my surprise while doing some on- line shopping discovered this terrible news.
So So Upset

It is very, very sad indeed. I live in Randolph and the one in Randolph closed already in spring. Now I have to go to another town to get fabric materials or even order online for the materials now ...

Will be heading to Framingham to stock up on their fabric. Now, the only store that's I love to buy fabric from is the one in Downtown boston.

I used to work at the Fabric Place in Warwick and this is the job that will always hold a special place in my heart. I absolutely loved working there and even though I love my job now it's just not as fun as Fabric Place was.
I moved out of state in 2001 and have yet to find another fabric store like Fabric Place. I am very sad to learn that they have had to close all of their doors permanently.

I have learned today that all locations of the Fabric Place will close their doors on Dec. 31, 2008. I'll truly miss it; I loved the classes, browsing the endless fabric selections, finding a new quilting book. I've appreciated the tips and bits of information from the staff. This will be a great loss to downtown Framingham - the Fabric Place is a real drawing card.

Lat weekend was the big sale. They had a hired person standing at the intersection of Rte 126 wearing a sign touting the sale. It looked really low-rent, if you now what I mean. I do think they are going out of business, sooner rather than later. That's such a shame. I, too, remember when we called it "sportswear" and I was living in Watertown, years and years ago. I hope they can stay open! However, last weekend I wondered aloud why they are still in that location....I think it scares some people away, being tough to find and navigate the maze back to Rte. 135. Fabric Place, please stay open for us !

Bad news, rumors are spreading like wildfire on Ravelry (knit & crochet site) that FP is closing. They've cancelled the knitters breakfast and all classes for the Fall and their email stated the Education Dept was closing. We fear it may be more than just the Ed dept....

Glad to see the Fabric Place is still there and doing well. I used to buy fabric there for my Home Ec. sewing projects at Lincoln Junior High School, which is now the Danforth Museum. The store was called Sportswear for Juniors and sold clothes at first; we called it "Sportswear" even after it became The Fabric Place. Nice to know some things don't change.
