Michi Kusa
August 7th, 2007
A while ago my friend and I decided to try Michi Kusa (2 Beacon St.) where the dearly departed Capt’n Bob’s use to be.
Inside is clean and modern with big booths and a sushi bar.
Â
For starters, we got miso soup and seaweed salad. Both were pretty standard and tasted as expected.
For sushi, we split a “boat” which was a variety of sashimi, maki and nigiri. The sushi wasn’t bad, although I don’t remember thinking it was amazing, which I think sushi should be.
We went a few months ago and I forget the prices but I remember thinking they were reasonable. ??????? Â Â The owner was very nice and there seemed to be a bunch of regulars who came in for take out and to sit at the bar, soI think this place has a loyal following. ????? ????????? Â They could have had an off night, who knows.Â
I don’t think it was an off night. We also ate there and found it very disappointing. The quality is so much better at places like Fugakyu, Oga’s, and Oishii and it’s not cheap. I don’t get why people like this place so much.

That’s pretty much what you can expect from them, OK but not great. Both Chef Orient and Minado are a better value if you don’t want to go into Boston.

Yes, that’s right Fred, my pick for the best all around local sushi place is Fugakyu in Sudbury – http://www.fugakyucafe.com/
It’s not cheap, but less than Oishii or Oga’s and it has a great variety of rolls, really fresh fish, and good service. Their tempura and cocktails are also great.

Fugakyu is one of my favorite sushi restaurants. I’ve never been to the one in Sudbury though. I’ve only been to the one in Brookline. Oishii, I personally feel is extremely over rated. I ate in the one in Chestnut Hill and didn’t think it was better than Fugakyu.

There is also a Oishii in Sudbury, called Oishii Too. It’s on the eastbound side of Route 20, east of Edgell Road. Fugakyu Cafe is also on the eastbound side of route 20, however it is west of Edgell.
As for Michi Kusa, I used to really love this place, used to go quite often. Sometime in the last six months though the quality has decreased slightly. I would say it’s still good though, and it’s MUCH better than Minado.

I like Fugakyu, the quality really is excellent. I have been several times and yes it is pricey but well worth it.
Funny thing is, I also enjoyed Minado…..I think it’s just the set up and all of the choices. I’ve only been once but really enjoyed it.

This place is okay. Been there a couple of times, don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon.

FACT: Restaurant building has been sold. Now, just awaiting beverage license (liquor) to be transferred….probably will be all accomplished by end of Nov.’07. No details about what location will become with new owners, but rumor is (uggh) another Chinese Restaurant.

We tried to go there Friday Nov. 2 and it has closed. We always liked this place. Brian is a gracious host and we always had great fresh food and never waited to be seated. Parking was terrific and we never had a bad meal there.
