Gangs of MetroWest

October 6th, 2008

Tonight I went to the “Gangs in MetroWest” presentation/discussion at Framingham Union Hospital.
Deputy Chief Ken Ferguson gave a very informative presentation that showed examples of gang presence from tagging/graffiti , the types of gang members that are in Framingham and what the police are doing about it.  While there are gang members in Framingham, we were told it is actually a small amount considering the size of our town and the FPD wants to control it before gangs actually settle in.

There was an interesting discussion after the presentation about getting to the source of the problem, which really is encouraging kids to get involved in positove activities and not gangs in the first place.  This involves community outreach programs, proactive school resource officers, and community networking as well as looking at family life and trying to help bring in positive reinforcement in kids lives and don’t want to join gangs to get praise.

It was really interesting, I feel educated on this subject that I don’t know much about and have a added respect for what the Framingham Police do to make our town safer.

  1. Michelle, thanks for posting about this important issue and thanks for letting me sit with you!! It was great to see you — live and in person — again!!

I thought the Police did a very thorough job of explaining what they could to us. I’ll bet that there’s a lot more going on than we know about, but I trust that they know what they’re doing and they’ll take whatever steps they can to keep us as safe as they can.

WE ALL HAVE TO BE VIGILANT, THOUGH. I have found that the Framingham Police Department is wonderfully responsive and very receptive to input from average citizens who happen to see things happening.

If you see something, CALL THE POLICE. They’ll protect your identity and move right in there, if there’s something to be done.

I was glad to get the overview and I was somewhat relieved to learn that the gang problem is very much on the radar of the police and is, therefore, very much under control.

Hey, Michelle. I heard that the League of Women Voters put out some really awesome cookies at this event!!! I could smell the cookies from my chair!
