Firefly’s

December 5th, 2006

We went to Firefly’s for lunch last weekend.  I’ve heard it’s the best BBQ around from Phantom but sometimes he’s not 100% trustable or I question if he’s paid off.
I’m not a huge BBQ person, not that I don’t enjoy it but I know I’m not a connoisseur either.  It definitely smells like BBQ when you walk in, which really gets you in the mood. ???
We sat in the bar area and out waitress was attentive and friendly.  She explained that there is a condiment bar to get sauces and toppings.

On the condiment bar were beets, baby corn, three bean salad, hot peppers pickles and a few other things I forget.
I got the sliced brisket with grilled asparagus and sauteed vegetables.

Ethan got BBQ steak tips with mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables.

Ethan said the tips were really good.  My brisket was a little dry but I put some BBQ sauce on it and it wasn’t bad.

I was glad there wasn’t a lot of people when we went (after the lunch rush).  I can imagine that place being really loud on the weekends.  It also reminded me of “Coyote” a Texas style BBQ/steakhouse place that was where Liam’s Tavern used to be and where “Ipanema” is now. ???? ???????? ???????   I used to wait tables there and just being around the smells and atmosphere brought back some funny memories.

Firefly’s isn’t bad, not outstanding but next time I get a BBQ craving I’d go back and try something else besides the brisket.

  1. My favorite BBQ place is Blue Ribbon in Newton on Washington St. OMG, it’s amazing!! =) Then I head to Tennesse’s then to Firefly’s, but that’s just me. Thanks for writing all you do!

  2. heard mixed reviews about that place too.
    have you been to “ipanema”?

  3. Ditto on Blue Ribbon, best BBQ in the area.

    Firefly’s is mediocre.

Ipanema is awful, you would think you could get good Brazillian churrasca in Framingham, but not from this place!

  4. The ribs at fireflys are very good; much better than the brisket. I have found the brisket dry too. We always get the stl louis ribs with memphis sauce.the cucumber salad is very good.

  5. Blue Ribbon also gets my vote. I used to live down the street and used to get takeout at least once a week. You wouldn’t think to get a burrito at a BBQ joint, but let me tell you they are great.

My favorites at Blue Ribbon are the pulled chicken, burnt ends and the jerk half chicken. They also have great cole slaw and the best beans around! If you’re lucky they’ll have the beets vinaigrette side on the specials board. It’s fantastic!

  6. Your mistake at Firefly’s was ordering the wrong item: get their St. Louis ribs with Memphis BBQ sauce, with a side of sweet potato mash and collard greens and cornbread. Their ribs are great, pulled pork plate is good too.

  7. Firefly’s has a large menu, but if you’re going to judge a barbecue place, I think it would be helpful to order a signature barbecue item like ribs or pulled meat. I order the pulled chicken sandwich or platter there all the time, and it’s very very good. My husband really likes the ribs. It’s definitely justified to say that perhaps they ought to stick to the BBQ basics because you didn’t like the brisket, but I’d urge you to reconsider Firefly’s as a BBQ place by trying a BBQ standard first.

  8. Yeah, like I said I’m not a BBQ connoisseur so I just figured anything they had would be in the BBQ family and since the brisket was listed in the BBQ section of their menu I figured it was.
Next time I go out for BBQ (which is so rare it’ll probably be in a year!) I’ll be sure to try something else : )
Also, I used to live right off Mass Ave. in Arlington with Blue Ribbon at the end of my street and I agree they’re great.

  9. sharon – brisket is a BBQ classic! Go to any BBQ competition or talk to any BBQ enthusiast and you will find that brisket is an extremely popular BBQ choice, a signature BBQ dish if you will. Burnt ends, for example, a classic BBQ offering, comes from ends of a brisket after the rest has been sliced.

Sliced brisket is definitely classic BBQ, it’s possible that Firefly’s just doesn’t smoke good brisket.

  10. While Firefly’s isn’t the best of Boston BBQ, it’s certainly better than Tennessee’s. The ribs are their signature item, but that’s no excuse for dry brisket. Also worth trying at Firefly’s are the burgers and chili.

  11. OK, Scott, I stand corrected. To me, BBQ is ribs and pulled meat, while brisket is something my mom simmers for holidays 🙂

  12. Wow! I remember Coyote’s! I used to love going there for dinner. My favorite was the “oink & moo” beef ribs & baby backs. BTW, the fried chicken is very good at Firefly’s.

  13. The owner is a real nice guy who teaches BBQ classes at Keefe Tech once a year.. worth taking for the ribs you get to pig out on at the end of the night.

  14. I just ate at Firefly’s for the first time tonight and would classify the meal as amazingly mediocre. I got the 4 meat combo, ribs, baby back ribs, bbq chx and sliced brisket.

The food came out in 2 minutes, not kidding. Which means that everything is sitting under hot lights waiting to be served.

Ribs were decent, but dry. Sauces there are pretty good.
BBQ chx was fatty and tasted too much like fuel, and not smokey good fuel. It was simply not good.

Brisket was terrible. Huge thick cuts with far too much fat and meat that lacked smoke or flavor. It honestly tasted boiled. This was the worst item on the plate.

Mac and Cheese side was bland and standard, garlic mashed potato was bland and dry.

On a personal note, I’m a huge bbq snob and can make a mean rib myself. My personal favs in the Boston area are Blue Ribbon, Red Bones and Jakes Dixie Road house in Waltham.

I give firefly’s a 60 out of 100. It’s cheap and easy, but low quality.
