Limey’s Pub

October 3rd, 2010

Last night Ethan and I went to check out the newly opened Limey’s Pub.  I’ve been looking forward to this place opening because it’s in walking distance of my house and it’s something new and different for downtown.
Inside they’ve done a great job with remodeling.  It’s not the dark (although kind of dim) shady atmosphere that Sampan was and it had a laid back and yes, “pubby” feel to it. ???? ??????? ???? ???? ?????

We started off with a couple pints of Guiness

and then Ethan got the shepherd’s pie and I got the fish and chips:

The pie was really good.  A traditional mixture of beef and lamb with vegetables, mashed potatoes and cheese.

and the fish was perfectly light and flakey:

The fries were really great too.  The service was friendly and attentive, as you’d expect it to be during their first week open but I think it is just the kind of place that will always make you feel welcome and treat their customers well. ????? ???????
I’m so glad this was a good experience with good food because as we know, downtown needs some good places to go to. I really wish them well.
No website yet and if you google them, there’s not a lot of information like a phone number or anything but I’m guessing it’s because they’re just so new, but they’re at 101 Concord Street (where Sampan’s used to be). uno rules

  3. Thanks so much for the review – I wanted to head there this weekend but didn’t get the chance.

Question: I notice a kid in one of your picutres above and my wife and I were thinking of going there for an early dinner with our two kids – did you feel it was a place they would be welcomed? One of my two would need a high-chair.

Either way, with kids or without, I’ll be in there for a pint soon!

  4. Went there last night, with my wife and our two five-year-olds. We had a nice time, and we’d recommend it.

It was pretty empty (understandably, it was a Sunday night). When we arrived, there were TVs going pretty loud, which is typical of most places these days. But after we seated ourselves as far as possible from the TVs, the staff seemed to get the message, turned them down, and put on some quiet John-Mayer-type music. Anyway, it was nice they were attentive to us that way.

They gave the kids crayons and balloons, so kid friendly it is. And the food was quite good, with a few hard-core pub choices like Scotch Egg (hard-boiled egg wrapped in sausage and deep fried) along with the chicken-wing-type stuff. And our food was very good (fish and chips, burgers).

We talked with the owner, a British guy who was very friendly. He mentioned that he found it hard getting the place approved etc. I’d say that if the town of Framingham wants downtown to have more nice places like this, we have to work hard to ENCOURAGE new arrivals like Limey’s (tax breaks, help with permitting, etc.) who will make downtown a destination, not DISCOURAGE them.

Also, where do you park down there? Maybe there’s a nearby lot. But the street is lined with scary signs that say “Temporary Parking After 7 pm.” What does that mean? How temporary? How does that encourage anybody to spend time downtown after dark?

  5. I stopped by yesterday morning butthey were not open. I had a peek inside and it does look nice.

Can anyone that has been there tell me if they have a dart board?

    Comment by Joe October 4, 2010 @ 9:24 am

  6. Yes, they do have a dart board.

  9. I was there myself on Saturday – it was great. I recommend the chicken curry & chips. Very good!! And they have Magner’s Cider too – something that you can’t get many places out here. Yay!! The waitress was very nice and did mention plans for a dartboard and a pool table. Now if only they’d sell some Cadbury’s choclates and maybe some Walker’s crisps at the bar and it’d be perfect 🙂

  10. I had lunch here Sunday. It is definitly NOT Sampans. The new owners did a great job renovating and cleaning up the inside. The only issue I had was parking. There is an empty parking lot in the back that the owners aren’t sure who owns and apparently Smitty’s towing likes to tow anything that parks there. The owners are actively trying to find out how to let customers park there without issue.
The menu was nice and small, just like you’d expect in a pub. I had a chicken sandwiche that was really good and my friend had the sausage sandwiche which was done really well too. The beer list is not extensive, but it stays away from your typical bud, coors, miller crap. This is definitly a good start to making downtown more desirable. I wish them luck.

  11. I went there with my partner and did not like the service I recieved. Although the food was pretty decent, I had an awfully rude and quite frankly creepy bartender. His name was Mike or Michael or Mitch or something like that, but he was extremely slow in asking if I needed another drink or even coming in and checking on us. He was however quite interested in perhaps a friend of his who he was talking to and leaning on the counter. I will probabyl give this place another shot but hope I don’t have to deal with his non-sense again.

  12. I ate there sunday night and it was AWESOME!!! I had the sheperds pie and my friends had the fish and chips and the Limey Burger. Good drinks and Excellent service. I will be going back again this weekend.

  13. Great to see a nice new pub that seems inviting come to downtown. I’ll have to stop in for a pint soon. I don’t think many people will miss the Sampan.

It would also be a good place I bet to stop in before or after a show at Amazing Things for a quick bite as well.

    Good luck Limey’s!

  14. I’ve been in several times. Every meal was good! Families are welcome and they have a pool table and dartboard. The place is clean and the staff are friendly. Let’s support them and keep this place! The owners are working on the parking situation. What a nice addition to downtown!

  15. had meatloaf, wife had the burger

the good: meatloaf, whipped potatoes, burger, gravy

the bad: fries with burger tasted like they had been fried well in advance – a definite no no for those who know the restaurant biz – fries should be made to order

got a vodka collins – EXTREMELY WEAK – tasted no booze. for good drinks i reccommend Han or O’Connells.

Limeys needs to learn that the people who frequent bars in that area simply have no use for a weak drink. this isn’t fanueil hall, weak pours will not fly in downtown framingham

    Comment by Joe October 11, 2010 @ 10:45 am

  16. I was there on the 2nd day they were open. It was a friday night and I took my HS age son for dinner after his HS activity. We were there around 7 and there were some people there that seemed to be old sampan regulars. the food was overall good but there were issues that I assume to being open for only two days. I had the fish/chips. fish was great, fries were hot but not crisp. My son had the limey burger. came out a few mintues after my meal. he liked it but the burger was a lttle to med/rare for my taste. His fries though were perfect. Best yet , the waitress forgot to add our drinks to the bill. I took that for the trade of my bad fries and the uneven food timing for our meals.
I will return and based on the pic of that sheppards pie, look forward to having that next time.
And i absolutely agree that downtown needs more places like this to atract the regular folks who reside in this town.

  17. Man, I found this website looking for something else and here is a bar where I used to go for some chinese food!
I love their shrimp with fried rice!
The last time I was there was in 2004, NBA finals… Lakers vs Detroit. I was 20yo by the time and I wanted to have my meal there while watching the game. They didn’t let me because of my age and I missed the game. Never returned. Never will.

  18. Limey’s added a second page to their menu with 5 new sandwiches and 4 burgers! Some changes to the original menu to try and adjust things from opening. Also, they are doing cornhole on Sundays, luck of the draw on Weds, Kereoke on Thurs. and looking for some nice musicians for Friday. You can become a fan on facebook to to find out more.

  19. This place should be called Slimey’s.

We went last Friday. The food was okay. As noted by others,
the french fries leave a lot to be desired. The fish-n-chips
tasted like the oil it was fried in. The Shepard’s pie was very good.

However, I just got my credit card bill and I got an additional $10 on it. I should have known when I didn’t get a receipt despite leaving the waitress cash.

    I won’t frequent Slimey’s again.

Every restaurant tries its best, but sometimes mistakes occur, we would love to correct any issues if they are brought to our attention. Sorry about your experience.

  21. I’m new to the neighborhood and took my visiting parents to Limey’s hoping for some good English beer and food. I got the fish and chips. I loved my homemade, hot, and crisp fries. My mom got the salad with goat cheese and she was happy to have her fresh green with yummy walnuts and goat cheese. My dad also got the fish and chips and by the looks of his empty plate he enjoyed it. I was very excited to have a variety of beers on tap that you don’t see at every bar. I wish you the best of luck and will be back without my parent on a Saturday night to hear some live music.

They have 3 dart boards and a luck-of-the-draw on Wednesday evenings at 7:30.

  27. I haven’t been in yet, but by the general tone of these comments it sounds like a nice addition to downtown. I will visit soon.
It’s too bad, though, that I saw that screaming MWDN online headline and mugshot yesterday of the guy that was arrested there as an “undesirable” for attempted murder of his girlfirend. As much as I want the Limeys and other new establishments to thrive, unfortunately they have to survive this locale rife with undesirables. Good for the owners for calling attention to this guy. Unfortunately, too many incidents like that one will undermine the establishment. I genuinely wish Limeys all the best.

  29. My wife and I finally made it down to Limey’s for a quick beer last night. The young ladies tending the bar were very nice and know how to pour a proper pint.

We struck up a conversation with a young couple next to us at the bar who are new to Framingham and already seem at home at Limey’s and friendly with the staff. I get the vibe that this is the kind of place that will become the local pub for lots of people. On the other side of us was an elderly gent having dinner by himself. In the dining areas there were two large groups having a lively time over dinner and drinks.

For 7 p.m. on a Friday night I would have expected more people, but perhaps they’re still finding their audience, or it’s more of a later crowd type of place. My new friend at the bar said they’re going to be bringing in live music, which will add to the attraction.

A nice addition to downtown indeed!

  32. sweet pot fries sucked too salty and who the hell puts pepper on french fries, leave that up to the customer. I also agree the drinks were weak. The bartenders also need to leave the married men alone, especially when their wives are sitting right next to them!

    Comment by tinkerbell May 31, 2011 @ 4:08 pm

  33. Do not go to this place if you want to have a good night, the service is very rude and the entire place is a dump, there are nicer bathrooms then that entire place put together I am not even joking either, the drinks are over priced and watered down, there is nowhere to park and the service is slow and rude. I got a long island iced tea me and my friends decided to go outside for a cigarette so we put napkins on top of our drinks and went outside for a cigarette. When we came back in the bar tender dumped our drinks out we said that we paid for them and he refused to reimburse us his answer was “you should not have been outside” and it wasn’t even last call yet they hadn’t even done last call yet and to think we tipped him when we ordered the drinks a good tip too. Do not go here the place is a dump, the drinks are over priced and watered down, the bartender was rude and ungrateful and the place smells horrible.
