Pizza quest: Gianni’s
September 2nd, 2006
We finally got to Gianni’s. Great pizza, I’d say one of the best so far. It’s an interesting operation. It was really busy and there were like 6 (maybe more?) guys behind the counter, all of them occupied doing something. Most people seemed to have called in their order and knew the drill which was to walk up to the counter and just say their first name, no “Hi, um, I called in an order, it’s under Smith”. It was just “Fred”, then one of the 6 guys would say “subs or pizza?” an exchange of money for food would be made and then it was on to the next first name.
I ordered our pizzas and one of the guys asked me for my name, said it would be 20 minutes and got back to work. ???? ????
We took a little stroll around Nobscot plaza while we waited. When we got back I peered through the people waiting at the counter and a the guy who took my order looked up and saw me and said “Just about 5 more minutes Michelle”. ????? ??? ????  I don’t know why but I was impressed by that, I’ve never been there before and he remembered my name instead of remembering just what I ordered. Maybe since all the other customers were such regulars I stood out because he never saw me before, I don’t know. ???? ?????
We got a plain and a Greek pizza, both very good:
Best Pizza in Framingham. They beat Francos by a nose.

The crust edge looks very large. Is this crust tasty to make it worth it, or is it just a lack of sauce and cheese at the edge?
We just discovered a new pizza place in Framingham, called Ryan’s, really quite decent. Where 126 meets Route 9, very near the new (and terrible) Daniela’s Cantina, and not far from the (terrible, in our opinion) Michi Kusa.

Hi Jeff,
It’s funny you mention that because I’ve had my eye on Ryan’s lately. I’m kind of pizza’d out but next time we get one I’ll try there.
Anyway, while the sauce, cheese and toppings are great at Gianni’s, the crust is pretty much what it looks like: a lack of sauce and cheese. There have ony been two places I’ve ever eaten the crust of a pizza but neither are in Framingham.

Repectfully disagree with you on Giani’s crust. Perhaps where you grew up helped shape your individual pizza tastes.
I grew up in Medford. Between Medford, Somerville, Malden, and Everett, there was a sub/pizza place semminghly on every corner. The pizza was mostly NY style that Gianis and Francos serve. To me, these two places serve the type of pizza I grew up eating.
Greek stlye, like Centre Pizza, was not as prevelent.

I was just asking about Gianni’s based on the photos. I haven’t tried it yet, though still plan to.
I am not a pizza expert, nor do I play one on TV. I just eat and like some and dislike others. What does “Greek style” mean exactly? I grew up in New Jersey, actually, with NY style pizza influences, so I am still searching for the perfect pizza…

Gianni’s is my favorite local pizza place by far. I also grew up with NY-style pizza, which is one reason I like Gianni’s. The crust isn’t too thick or too thin, and the non-sauce/cheese edges are soft (and tasty), not crunchy. Highly recommended!

NY Style Pizza is the best, hands down…. and for that, Gianni’s is really the only game in town… (that rhymes). We tried Ryan’s…ummm…YUCK. Tried a few others like Franco’s and Pepperoncini’s… eh, so so. Tried a bunch of places in Natick center as well, all greek style with cheddar-like oily cheese, almost no sauce, and cracker or grease soaked sponge-like crust. If you’re ever in the BC area in Brighton, right on Beacon St. where the Green line runs, is a great little NY style place called Pino’s Pizza (the owners may actually be greek, but they make a NY style pizza for sure) — it’s GREAT. However, if you want the BEST, try the original location of Pizzaria Regina in the North End on Thacher St…. not only is the pizza exceptional, but the ambiance is great. Stroll up to Modern’s or Mike’s Pastry for a Cannoli after, yum.

Greek style is generally found in places named ” (insert neighborhood or town) House of Pizza”. The dough is placed in pans so when you order, the pizza maker just takes a dough filled pan, adds sauce, cheese, and any other toppings ordered and tosses the pan into the oven. The pizza will be a little thicker than NY style and the crust will crunch more like toast. Centre Pizza serves greek style. Royal in Nobscot as well.

Back in my days living in Framingham, Famous Pizza was our family favorite. Used to be in the old Pinefield shopping center, across from the Christa McAuliffe library. But it may have moved, if the Google search I just did is right. I haven’t lived in Framingham since 1988!

The only place to get a real Pizza since the late lamented Union House went away. The crust that some have commented on is light, airy, and well worth eating. I usually get it with mushrooms (fresh, not the canned ones that most places use.) The Greek pizzas are okay if you load them up with toppings to cover the oily cracker crust but this is the kind that stands out on its own

The best pizza in town for what’s it worth is Andrea’s which is right across the parking lot from Gianni’s. Really friendly family owned place. Great pizza and very great subs. I love that place and you should check it out sometime.

With all due respect, It’s not even close. Gianni’s is. hands down, the best N.Y. style pizza in the Metro-West. By default, that also makes it the best pizza period. Greek pizza sucks. That’s why people load up on the topping to mask the god-awfull insipid crust.
Paul Jasper’s posting above is excellent except for his omssion of Santarpio’s of E. Boston. It’s every bit as good, if not better than, Pizzeria Regina which I also like a lot.

As a former Framingham resident (not born, but raised within), I can say that Gianni’s is not only the best Pizza in town, but may indeed top the entire New England region.
Since moving away from Framingham, I have never really found anything that could stack up to what I can get from Gianni’s. Interestingly, enough, I found that “Pizza Pizza” in Toronto was pretty good, though that’s a bit of a hike from Middlesex County!
