Pro Wrestling Comes To Framingham!

May 16th, 2008

Next Friday night “Chikara” is making it’s Massachusetts debut at the Framingham Civic League. What is Chikara?  A Philadelphia-based, pro-wrestling organization that is family friendly and combines elements of the Mexican Lucha Libre and Japanese wrestling styles.  It has been described as a “comic book come to life”.
Some of their featured wrestlers:

Chikara contacted me to tell me about their event and offered an interview with their wrestler “Lightening” Mike  Quackenbush!
Here’s some Q&A where I display my fantastic interviewing skills:

How did Chikara decide on Framingham for it’s MA debut?—Framingham just seemed like the perfect fit for us in terms of size; not too big, not too small.

Why did you get into wrestling and did you have a role model?—I got into pro-wrestling during my high school days, and I idolized Jushin Liger, a Japanese wrestler with incredible skill and grace. I was already making money in wrestling by the time I got to college, and it just took over my life from that point on.

Do you have a signature move?—I am lucky enough to have a few. My “Lightning Lock” submission hold is a lot like tying my opponent into a pretzel until they must submit.

What do you listen to when you’re working out?—My taste in music is slightly dated. I listen to a lot of 80’s bands -Talking Heads, Squeeze, Simply Red, Crowded House, Naked Eyes, that sort of thing.

Who was the most challenging wrestler you’ve been in the ring with?—Back in 2002, not far from Framingham, in fact, I wrestled the late, great Eddie Guerrero shortly after his departure from the WWE. Just keeping up with him was exhausting.

Do you have a lucky pair of tights?—Not really, but I know some guys are very superstitious when it comes to those things.

What’s your favorite snack?—I’m a Creamsicle man, myself. There are just never enough in the freezer it seems.

But wait, there’s more!Chickara would like to offer a pair of tickets for some lucky person to go see the awesomeness of Aniversarioma, so I have set up a contest (sort of) where I will randomly pick a reader who comments to this post.  The winner of the tickets will be picked on 5/22.For more info check out their site: chikarapro.com

  5. In the mid/late-1980’s I worked at General Computer Stores, a store (singular store with a plural name) in Deerskin Plaza. We sold computers made by a company (Vendex I think) whose “spokesperson” was a pro wrestler named King Kong Bundy.

He came to our store to sign autographs one day. Complete insanity – folks lined up forever. I’ve never cared about wrestling but the whole thing was quite fun.

You can skip my name for the drawing, best the tickets go to someone who knows what Chikara is. 🙂
