Acapulcos

January 6th, 2010

Over the holiday season I got a gift certificate to Acapulco’s, which has quite a few locations, including Framingham, so Ethan and I headed out last night to see what it was like.
The building they’re in at 1656 Worcester Road, used to be the Iguana Cantina and I can’t remember what it was before that, Fortune house or Fortune Cookie.
I didn’t get a good picture of the outside but it’s always struck me as kind of an odd building to have a restaurant in and inside is a little tight but  they make it work.  The atmosphere in there is really nice and festive but not in-your-face festive.  There was a mariachi band walking around and playing at tables, which I know is in-your-face festive, but they were so laid back, it was comfortable and a nice treat to have on a quiet Tuesday night.

Our waiter was really friendly and attentitive, he started off by bringing over some chips and salsa.

Then we each got a glass of Sangria - which I didn’t see on the menu so I asked the waiter of they had it and he said “the best!”
Which was very good and served in a generously sized Margarita glass.

Since we had a gift certificate for a good amount, we got an appetizer plate called the “fiesta platter” which had nachos, mini-quesadillas, mini-flautas and buffalo wings.

For dinner Ethan got a chicken burrito

I got Pork Carintas in a quesadilla, which I should have just got the dish on it’s own, but it was still okay, the pork was a little on the dry side but not terrible.

I’d wrap up the experience as good.  The food is decent, the guacamole is very good and the atmosphere and service are excellent.  At first when I got the gift certificate to this place I wasn’t thrilled because I’m not a huge Mexican food fan but I’m glad we got to go because it was so nice inside and had a really nice night.

  1. I love that Acapulco’s! Their margaritas are great and the staff is really friendly. And I love Mexican food, so that helps. Glad you enjoyed it.

Have you every been to the aztec on rte 135? More of a family type restaurant but their food is very good as well.

  2. I love Acapulcos. They have great fish tacos and tacos al pastor (pork). Their fajitas are really good and they have some good steak dishes. Love their chips and salsa and their ultimate margaritas. They also make a great michelada, its kind of like a bloody mary with beer instead of vodka. Basically a light Mexican beer with lots of hot sauce!

  6. I’ve been to the Acapulcos in Newton a few times. I really like the fajitas and margeritas. I also enjoyed some delicious potato skins. I believe the Newton location recently moved to the old Ground Round location in Needham. Now that it’s closer I might have to go there more often!

  7. Also, at one point that restaurant was Chen’s. My family and I frequented Chens many, many times when I was growing up in Framingham.

  8. It’s somewhat good, but not great - the service was terrific; however, the food left a lot to be desired. Very small space, but nicely decorated.

  9. Too funny - I was passing Acapulco’s the other day and wondered if/when you had done a post on it. Speaking of Mexican, have you ever been to Dos Compadres on Rte 135 in Framingham? I’ve seen the sign for it but wasn’t sure if it was any good.

  10. Hi Chris,
No I haven’t been to Dos Compadres but maybe I’ll get to it one of these days.

  11. My husband and I go to Acapulco’s for lunch almost every Friday. I love it. We like to go early (they open at 11:30) and avoid the crowds. It is very popular at lunchtime, and the little parking lot is full by noon!

  12. I Love Acapulcos, is one of my favorite places to go and eat Mexican american food. I have been in both Sudbury and Framingham location and I like more the Framingham location now, before was the opposite. The only thing that I notice is that lately, and I know the economy is bad, but lately their portion are getting smaller by the day, the serve you the rice but is not that much and they spread it around the huge plate they use. Other than that I will always love their food and drinks too!!
