Cabot House Furniture

April 15th, 2007

I know Cabot House used to be some sort of function hall and I wish it still was.  No offense to Cabot House but it seems like a waste of space for a building with such a grand entrance.  That would be like Lombardo’s in Randolph becoming a furniture store and keeping that giant chandelier.  Also, it would be nice to have a special occasion place still on the strip there.

I was going to take time to go inside but honestly, after we went to so many furniture stores when we bought our house, if I never go into another furniture store again I’ll be a happy girl.  Besides, I think the real showpiece must be the giant cross-weave patio chair out front.

I’m guessing this is about 6 feet tall.  Was this made just for Cabot House?  Why would a factory make these?  It seems that a furniture place with higher-end furniture wouldn’t need a giant chair to draw people in.
Unless Bigfoot ordered a patio set and never picked it up so they just put one of the chairs out front to remind her it’s ready.  It’s rude to order things and then just not pick them up!

  1. Cabot House (and actually that whole building) used to be the Chateau DeVille. I believe that Lombardo’s in Randolph, was also a Chateau, but I’m not 100% sure. In it’s day, the Chateau DeVille hosted many famous people, such as Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones. It also hosted balls, etc. in it’s function rooms. Then, it was home to night clubs, such as Chevy’s. It’s a shame now to see it the way it is.

  2. Ah yes, the Chateau DeVille, another sad casualty of change along the Golden Mile. I saw Rodney Dangerfield there around 1980. It was also the host to Natick High proms for a number of years.

I agree, it’s always looked funny as a furniture store, what with the big Vegas-like portico entrance.

I wonder how it would do today if it returned to its nightclub/function room status?

  3. I remember always checking out the sign to see who was coming to the Chateau DeVille next when I would drive by with my parents. I know my mother saw Tom Jones there once.
They used to have an enormous chandelier in that big window but I guess they took it with them when they cleared out. :)

  4. I remember seeing a musical version of Oliver Twist at the Chateau with my Brownie Troop more years ago than I care to admit to!

Great blog Michelle! I often find myself driving by places going: “Hey, there’s the place she wrote about!” :)

  5. Didn’t I read something about a Krispy Kreme being built somewhere up in that Cabot furniture area? Could have sworn I did a few years ago.

  6. There was talk a few years ago about a Krispy Kreme being built up there, but it never happened. That was when the company was doing well and expanding. Since then, though, they haven’t done well, partly, I think, due to the low carb craze. Didn’t one of the MA stores close? I’m not sure.

  7. The Krispy Kreme in Saugus, the first one opened in Massachusetts, closed about 2 years ago. The building is now a bank.

I used to enjoy reading about the violations at Polly Estas, a night club at the same location in the 90’s. They were always getting press for underage liquor violations and unruly teens. I think Bonkers Funhouse Pizza was also there, Nick’s Comedy Stop, Boston Buffet, Pacific Buffet, DeScenza’s and Maximus (another night club).

I have not checked the blog, but have you been to Ginseng yet, the replacement for Pacific Buffet in the same building as Cabot House?

  8. there was also thunderbirds and heat in the back and in the front (the other side) these were all under 21 nightclubs which produced many fights in the parking lots

  9. Does anyone have any pics of Polly Estas when it was there? I worked there briefly, and want to put together a webpage or Myspace page about the club. Let me know through this forum, and I’ll see what I can do.

  10. Does anyone know what year the Chateau de Ville closed down? I was born in the late 70s and have some recall of the club and the chandelier but don’t remember when it made the change. Wasn’t it replaced on the sides by two mini-nightclubs, one over 18 and one under 18? I think one was called Whispers.
