Game corner gets boarded up

May 31st, 2007

On my way to work this morning I noticed that the broken windows at the game corner (at Davis and Grant st.)were finally boarded up.  As I posted before, I wonder who owned this place and why a bunch of arcade games are just sitting in there collecting dust.  I think it was in November I noticed someone smashed the glass in the window and door. ???? ??????? ?? ?????????   It was left like that all winter so I began to wonder if anyone even owned this part of the building anymore. ??????? ???? 2023    I just hope the owner doesn’t consider this a long-term fix and at least replaces the windows – if not clean the place up and open the arcade : ) I know it’s highly unlikely but I’d love for this place to be re-opened.

Let’s give ’em a hand!

The display window at Mimi’s Nails on Waverly St. caught my eye as I was walking to the train station last week.
There was something Twilight Zone-esque about it to me.  Like inside there would different shelves of other body parts and you can build your own electric grandmother.

Petsmart

April 27th, 2007

Last week we remembered we wanted to get our cat, Clyde, this toy we saw a while ago called “Thing in a Bag

As much as I hate Shopper’s (stupid) World, we thought Petsmart would be a good place to find Thing in a Bag. They didn’t have it but we did see in the back of the store, there is a doggie daycare which has a glass wall and you can watch dogs run around and play.

I was impressed that everyone seemed to get along and was having a good time.
We don’t have the time or the yard for a dog but we always find them so funny to watch. Often times seeing a dog’s expression while they stick their head out the window of a passing car will be the highlight of the day.  They’re just so sincere in their happiness, it’s funny.  Anyway, we could have sat there all day and watched these dogs run around and play.

While watching the dogs, we were approached by someone who works at the animal hospital that is right in the store.  He gave us a tour and showed us they have an operating room, quarantine area and heated pads for the cages.  The guy gave us a card that is good for a free first-time physical.  We may end up using this since Clyde doesn’t have a vet and we’ve been putting off taking him because he’s been healthy but he’s also a little fat and has a gut (long story how he turned out this way) and we didn’t want to get yelled at by the vet but this guy said he has a fat cat too and they won’t yell at us.

So maybe we’ll bring him down to see if they can see why he’s so fat, maybe they’ll tell us he’s just “big boned’.

Cabot House Furniture

April 15th, 2007

I know Cabot House used to be some sort of function hall and I wish it still was.  No offense to Cabot House but it seems like a waste of space for a building with such a grand entrance.  That would be like Lombardo’s in Randolph becoming a furniture store and keeping that giant chandelier.  Also, it would be nice to have a special occasion place still on the strip there. como se toma la ivermectina de 6 mg en gotas

I was going to take time to go inside but honestly, after we went to so many furniture stores when we bought our house, if I never go into another furniture store again I’ll be a happy girl.  Besides, I think the real showpiece must be the giant cross-weave patio chair out front.

I’m guessing this is about 6 feet tall.  Was this made just for Cabot House?  Why would a factory make these? doxycline and ivermectin treatment side effects   It seems that a furniture place with higher-end furniture wouldn’t need a giant chair to draw people in.
Unless Bigfoot ordered a patio set and never picked it up so they just put one of the chairs out front to remind her it’s ready.  It’s rude to order things and then just not pick them up!

The force is with us!

March 20th, 2007

Walking downtown yesterday, I noticed across from town hall was a freshly installed, promotional mailbox for the 30th anniversary “Star Wars” stamps out later this month.
This is one of 400 droid boxes that have been strategically placed around the country and the USPS has chosen our fair city town as one of the locations. Thanks USPS, nice to see a little treat downtown : )

Maybe R2 will use the “the force” and get downtown in better shape!

A Fine Bistro Meal

March 8th, 2007

I took a cooking class last night at Keefe Tech High School through their continuing education program.  The course was called “A Fine Bistro Meal”.

The class took place in the school’s restaurant “The East Side Room” which is open to the public for lunch on weekdays.

Inside is just like a professional kitchen, actually it’s better because there is so much room.

The instructor Michael Shammus, is a professional chef and a great teacher.  He showed us proper/more efficient ways of slicing, prepping and cooking/baking.
I met some wonderful people and after 2.5 hours we got to sit down with the fruits of our labor.  On the menu was:
-Grilled marinated skirt steak
-Scallops with couscous and bacon in a basil-cream sauce
-“Pomme frites” (fries)
-Salad with toasted candied walnuts and gorgonzola
-Bread with Gorgonzola butter
-Chocolate pot de creme

I could have arranged the plate a little nicer but at that point I was really hungry and just wanted to dig in.  Everything was fantastic, (and Ethan was impressed with the leftovers I brought home too)
I also got certificate for taking the course. Maybe I’ll bring it to my mom’s house and put it on her fridge : )

I highly recommend Keefe Tech classes, I took a yoga class there last year and was happy with that too.  The classes are also less expensive than other continuing education courses at other schools.

Interesting find

February 22nd, 2007

For me, anyway.  I was at the Asinayo Market downtown getting some soy sauce and sauce and shiritaki noodles when I came across these tiramisu snack cakes.

I though it was odd to find them in an Asian grocery store, even more odd that next to English, most of the words on the package were in Russian, on the back there is a drawing of people sitting outside an Italian cafe but all the signs are in Russian.

Also intriguing was the “It’s NOW” statement/label, along with a nice diagram to show you what part is the cake and what part is the “cheese cream”.

The company name is Orion, I don’t know what “It’s NOW” means (maybe It’s NOW that I will I give in to an impulse purchase).  The curiosity took over and I just had to try one!
I got home and opened the box to find it full of 12 little packages of individual cakes.

I split one in half to see if it resembled the drawing on the box and sure enough it did.

Now for the taste test.  I love tiramisu but wasn’t expecting much from this packaged, Russian/Asian(?) mock Italian snack cake that didn’t resemble the dessert at all, but I was pleasantly surprised.  The cake was moist and flavorful and the “cheese cream” was a lot lighter than I thought it would be.  It actually wasn’t half bad.  Obviously this is not a substitute for the real thing but for only 100 calories it was a nice little treat.
Ethan even tried one and said he liked it, and he doesn’t like too many experimental foods I’ve brought home over the years, so it must be good 🙂

Another grocery adventure at Asiyano!
