Cold Turkeys
February 4th, 2009
Driving to my weekend job at the Sherborn Out, I drive behind the prison and it becomes the cusp between downtown blah and beautiful Sherborn”countryside”. I came across a band of turkeys crossing the road. Of course once I got the camera out they all made their way into the woods but I’m always amazed how anything outside of a house lives in the winter especially when we the cold weather we had last week.
Anyway, it was nice to see some “nature”.Â
I spotted 5 or 6 turkeys crossing Central St. last week.

My grandmother, who has lived on Brook Street for about 30 years, routinely sees deer, turkeys, and other “unusual” wildlife in her backyard. Her sightings have increased over the past decade or so; we suspect that it might be due to intensified development on previously undeveloped land/former farmland in the area. While I’m not completely anti-development, it’s certain that there are fewer and smaller areas of land that are suitable for wild animals to live without encountering humans, sometimes with disastrous consequences (as anyone who has ever hit a deer with their car can probably attest…)

Seriously! I wonder the same thing. Those robins and squirrels have GOT to be cold!
I was in awe when I picked up my final CSA share in Framingham this January–just after those negative temps–that the greens had all survived growing in the ground here, albeit covered, but still!

I live near Central Street and we had a group of hens last Fall like these walking around but they had a big old Tom with them and he was very impressed with himself. The majority of time they spent on our street comprised of him looking at himself in various reflective storm doors and probably thinking “damn I look good” while the hens foraged nearby.
Funny stuff.

I encounter those turkeys in Sherborn frequently. They are quite brazen and will stop right in the middle of the road and stare at me through my windshield. When they are good and ready they waddle off to the side of the road!

I wonder if this is the same flock I saw last year along Speen Street in Natick? Maybe there are turf wars between them and the Canada geese that live closer to the Framingham/Natick line?
