Main St. bridge
May 29th, 2007
I forget when this bridge was closed but it’s been a while, like 10 years maybe or maybe it just seems like 10 years I’m trying to think when I last drove over this bridge if it was when I was at Framingham State or after I graduated- either way it’s been a long time.
I like this bridge and that Main St. is a nice way to get from Edgell Rd. the Ski Market plaza or just to get to Rt. 9.
They are working on it now, I’m assuming they will open it up to vehicle traffic when they’re done but even if they decide not to (stranger things have happened), it is nice to just walk on the bridge and look at the Sudbury River.  Sometimes I’ll walk to Trader Joes or Whole Foods and stop at the bridge and hang out for a few minutes. There are so many trees and birds you can forget you are a stones throw from route 9.Â

This construction extends to route 9, which I forgot even goes over the river, until the cones and medians went up last winter and the lanes have been altered/reduced in this area.
I don’t know how long this will take but I think it will be worth it. I’m really looking forward to getting this bridge and street open again.
That’s the Funny Bridge!
When being driven to nursery school (Happy Hollow) we crossed this bridge in the car. The metal grates made a funny sound under the car, so we named it the Funny Bridge.
I suspect the reconstructed bridge will no longer be “funny” but to me, it’ll always be the Funny Bridge.
But yeah, it’s been closed a long, long time.

We used to drive over that bridge coming home from Mass at St. Bridget’s. The grates did make a funny sound. We called it “The Singing Bridge”.

The MassHighway site says the route 9 construction isn’t scheduled to be done until Spring 2009. I used to take the Main St bridge to get around the light by the Walgreens coming from Winter St. I can’t believe it’s been nearly 10 years.

Actually, I think that the route 9 construction is a different project. That project involves replacing that bridge. I thought that I read that the Main St. bridge will be repaired sometime in 2008. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. It will be so much more convenient for me. I know that the neighbors enjoyed their deadend street and fought the reconstruction. One even offered to put planters up in front of the barriers.

What is up with that Route 9 construction to replace the bridge? They did some work on it last fall - but now I never see anyone working there. Can you get the scoop?

That bridge has been closed FOREVER. My uncle used to own a store in the plaza F/K/A Deerskin Plaza where the Ski Market is located. So, I used to travel over this bridge quite a bit. Since rt. 9 backs up a bit in front of this plaza it was nice to have a “back way” until they closed it.
