No!
March 22nd, 2008
A source has informed me that White Hardware in the Franklin St. (sad) Plaza is going out of business (after 80 frickin years!).
As I mentioned in my previous post about this store, I enjoyed having it near my house and it’s pleasantly simple shopping experience. I’m sad to see a small business close and also add to the sadness of sad plaza.
I hope something useful will move into this space but I won’t be surprised if the building remains vacant for years either.
We will miss ye, White Hardware. Thanks for being there when we needed you!
It’s a shame, but they never seemed to have anyone in there - plus, unless you were aware or a local, you’d never find it.
I wish them well, it was always amusing to go in there, with the banter and all.

It’s sad, but it really doesn’t surprise me. They don’t seem to get much business and I’m sure have been hurt by Lowe’s and Home Depot. The last few times I’ve been in there they’ve had less and less merchandise.

monnick supply has much more to offer, with the cooperative service to boot. i’ll never forget the time the woman owner wouldn’t give me a store credit on a brand new paint brush i bought there because i didn’t have a receipt, even though i was buying about $100 of stuff. and they weren’t open on sundays. sorry, no love lost. but couldn’t agree more about the additive sadness this gives sad plaza. which, btw is my favorite nickname, as much as i hate to admit it.

The Sad Plaza gets even sadder . . .
I shopped there almost every Saturday and I amassed quite a tool box thanks to this store.
I will miss Marge, George, Dave, Irv, and Emma The Dog, and I will always be grateful to them for the excellent advice and top-notch service that they gave me each and every time I shopped in their great store.
I wish them all the best.
