Old Fabric Place to be…a new fabric place.

October 12th, 2010

According to the realtor for this property, she has stated:” The FABRIC PLACE site will be reopened by the end of October. The name will be “Sewfisticated Discount Designer Fabrics”. The Framingham store will be the third location of a family operated business. The new website www.framinghamfabric.com  will be online by Monday. (although it’s not as of today)
They will carry a complete selection of fabrics at deeply discounted prices including all types of apparel fabric, brand-name quilting cottons, high-end home decorating fabrics, and tons of trims, notions, ribbons, and crafts.”

I’m actually glad to see another fabric place move in because I stopped quilting when they left and hope to get inspired by a new place I can easily get to and hopefully it will be worth other sewers to travel out to it like they did with the old store.
Joanne’s is okay for the usual fabric needs but sometimes schlep to get to down rt.9. in Natick.  Between this, the new appliance/furniture store, Limey’s and the soon-to-be-opened balloon design shop, it seems like downtown is picking up a little steam.  It’s nice to be able to say that because yesterday I almost wrote a full rant about how much I hate downtownbut I’ll save that for another post when I have a day like I did yesterday.
Anyway, looks like things are picking up so I hope it continues to fill vacant stores with tax-paying businesses.

  1. Your confirmation is terrific news! I’d heard a rumor that they were coming back, driving by the shell in Framingham center was still making me sad. Franklin Mill Stores is even more of a schlep than Joann but has stunning quilting fabrics and is a small local store that I like to frequent, but FP will always be my “home” store.

  2. I’m glad to see that a for-profit business wants this space, and hopefully won’t get too bogged down at the Planning Board if it’s a sinilar operation.
Leslie, if I’m not misinformed, it sounds like this is not the “Fabric Place” reopening, but an entirely different business. Nonetheless, let’s hope the idea is more than half-baked (-sewn?).

  3. Right, the FP family is locating a new place in Natick, if I heard the rumor correctly. Either way, the new store will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Home sewing is on the rebound, if you count all blogs and crafty sites and etsy. There’s definitely room for competition to JoAnn.

  4. The loss of The Fabric Place was huge.

I’m so excited to hear that Sewfisticated Discount Designer Fabrics is opening in its place. Along with the easy-to-find home dec fabrics and notions, I hear it will be carrying apparel fabric– which is SO hard to find!

Can’t wait for opening day (I hear it’s Oct 25th), and for their website: http://www.framinghamfabric.com

  5. This is great news for local business, but I’m still not going downtown. 🙂 Until the traffic headaches are solved, and who knows when that will ever happen, I always go around downtown to get there from here. Preserving sanity is a good thing.

  7. The “SewFisticated” that is there now is awful. The sales rep can’t comprehend simple English and what really aggravates me is that they’ll take your money with a smile but refuse to give it back under any circumstance. My wife spent a small fortune in there recently and needed to return some items (hoping to have the $ refunded to her credit card with which she paid) only to have the same sales rep smile & point to a tiny handwritten note waaay up high that reads Store Credit Only…. In my opinion that is criminal behavior that is totally uncool & unprofessional. What grimy crooks. PS; The “store credit” is a business card that the same rep wote the dollar amount, the date & the word credit on… Go grab some cards.
