Uncle Cheung’s

November 29th, 2006

We went to Uncle Cheung’s on route 9 last Saturday.  I always forget about this place but decided to revisit it to check it out.  I haven’t been here in probably 15 years.
We got there soon after they opened around 11:45am.  I’m not sure if it’s every day but they only had combination plates available.  The plates come with rice, egg roll and soup.
I got egg drop and Ethan got hot and sour.

The soup was really good, almost too good.  I found out later that they use MSG in their food.
For lunch I got sauteed Chinese cabbage (baby bok choy?) and Ethan got some sort of spicy chicken like kung pao.

The food was good, although probably not worth the minor reaction I get to MSG : (
The service was very good and friendly though. It’s clean and comfortable inside too.

  1. My kids love this place. There is another Chinese Rest directly across the street that we have eaten in and they have many more traditonal (non americanized) dishes. In response, UC’s now has two menus, regular and more traditional. We now order dishes off both.

  2. across the street, they have a terrific ‘crab and asparagus’ soup, and i think it’s real crab.

  3. I’ve been going to Uncle Cheung’s for lunch since the ’80s, when co-workers and I used to get out for lunch. I still meet up with those friends occasionally there, and the owner still remembers us from back then, which is nice.

  4. We just went there today because I saw that it served Shanghai cuisine. I was curious to see if this was true. I am very happy to say that it was VERY GOOD food, which I highly recommend you try. We ordered Fresh Mustard Greens with garlic sauce and Salted Duck with Taro. The taro was perfectly cooked and was melt in your mouth and the salted duck was perfectly salted, not too salty, not too sweet. Don’t order the run of the mill egg rolls, lo mein, fried rice. That is NOT authentic Chinese food and will only get so good. It WILL be MSG laden because that’s the taste people come to expect. You are missing My husband and I were among 5 other groups of people at the restaurant and all with the exception of us ordered from the Americanized Chinese menu. Sorry, I’m not trying to be hard on you but it’s so frustrating to me when people go into ‘Chinese’ restaurants and order the same generic dishes instead of trying to authentic cuisine.

  5. I forgot, the mustard greens were fresh, crispy, and cooked minimally so that you tasted the vegetable and garlic. The Shanghai menu is in English, also.
