Fabric Place

June 27th, 2008

As a quilter, it’s such a treat to have Fabric Place in walking distance of my house.  I really like that it’s a business near me that I can use and has a wide variety of anything sewing related.   It’s also a business that brings people who normally avoid downtown, down here so I consider it a shiny gem of the neighborhood.
They have bolts and bolts of all sorts of fabric, all kinds of threads, notions, books etc…  It’s two levels of sewing paradise!

They also offer classes, designing services and make custom draperies.  This summer they are offering a free class every Saturday of various topics, you can check out the schedule here.

  1. Fabric Place is also a knitters paradise, and their annual knitters breakfasts are wonderful. This is quite a little gem in downtown.

  2. My mom used to drag us to this place but we always found something to do. There were lots of corners to hide in and steps to play on and , of course, barrels of buttons to play in!!

  3. Fabric Place is a gem. It’s really too bad that they have had to close some of their stores. Their main competitor is closer geographically to me, but you cannot beat FP’s selection and super helpful staff. I have taken classes there as well. Definitely support THIS local business!

  4. It’s a great place but I always found their staff to be a little on the surly side.

  5. Thank goodness! I drove past a bunch of signs stuck into the side of the road the other day for a sale at FP and I thought it might be closing.
I haven’t had a chance to go in yet, but am looking forward to it, as soon as I get $ to make curtains for our new house.

  6. Glad to see the Fabric Place is still there and doing well. I used to buy fabric there for my Home Ec. sewing projects at Lincoln Junior High School, which is now the Danforth Museum. The store was called Sportswear for Juniors and sold clothes at first; we called it “Sportswear” even after it became The Fabric Place. Nice to know some things don’t change.

  7. Bad news, rumors are spreading like wildfire on Ravelry (knit & crochet site) that FP is closing. They’ve cancelled the knitters breakfast and all classes for the Fall and their email stated the Education Dept was closing. We fear it may be more than just the Ed dept….

  8. Lat weekend was the big sale. They had a hired person standing at the intersection of Rte 126 wearing a sign touting the sale. It looked really low-rent, if you now what I mean. I do think they are going out of business, sooner rather than later. That’s such a shame. I, too, remember when we called it “sportswear” and I was living in Watertown, years and years ago. I hope they can stay open! However, last weekend I wondered aloud why they are still in that location….I think it scares some people away, being tough to find and navigate the maze back to Rte. 135. Fabric Place, please stay open for us !

  9. I have learned today that all locations of the Fabric Place will close their doors on Dec. 31, 2008. I’ll truly miss it; I loved the classes, browsing the endless fabric selections, finding a new quilting book. I’ve appreciated the tips and bits of information from the staff. This will be a great loss to downtown Framingham - the Fabric Place is a real drawing card.

  10. I used to work at the Fabric Place in Warwick and this is the job that will always hold a special place in my heart. I absolutely loved working there and even though I love my job now it’s just not as fun as Fabric Place was.
I moved out of state in 2001 and have yet to find another fabric store like Fabric Place. I am very sad to learn that they have had to close all of their doors permanently.

  11. It is very, very sad indeed. I live in Randolph and the one in Randolph closed already in spring. Now I have to go to another town to get fabric materials or even order online for the materials now …

Will be heading to Framingham to stock up on their fabric. Now, the only store that’s I love to buy fabric from is the one in Downtown boston.
