Herbie’s
November 1st, 2007
Some more footage from the video shot from the (moving) car given to me by Mitch Cohen.
Herbie’s was an ice cream shop where Cafe Bagel (or fresh bagel) is now in Framingham Center.
I loved going here as a kid after ballet lessons at the dancing arts center, which was right around the corner. As a teenager, my friend worked here, my friends and I would visit and wait for her to get off work. I don’t know how they went out of business, they were always pretty busy from what I remember.
Anyway, I just thought I’d share some more lost footage of Framingham that Mitch so generously allowed me to use.
I LOVED Herbie’s!
Their oreo ice cream was THE BEST.

I loved Herbie’s. I think they briefly re-opened at a location on Rt. 20 in Sudbury across from Longfellow Racquet Club. I think there is an Indian restaurant there now though.
On another note, there are a couple of other Framingham businesses I’m wondering what happened to both were in the Framingham mall.
First, Cookies Cookin’ I used to love this place. Best cookies ever. I think it was still there until the time they re-did the mall to get Target in there.
Second, is Makas’ Pizza (I think that’s how it was spelled). Great Greek style pizza and yummy Greek salads.
Anyone know what happened to these businesses?

Michael,
It’s funny you mention Cookies Cookin’, my sister and I still compare cookies now to what those were like. I remember we’d be all excited if my mom had to go to Lechemere because we knew cookie form there. The best cookies ever!

I’m glad folks are enjoying stills from my friend’s home movie!
Herbie’s has a funny connection for me. I was a teenage employee at the Cape Cod Restaurant, a block or so away from Herbie’s. The Cape Cod was like Friendly’s - casual food and ice cream. But on lunch breaks, some employees would often wander over to Herbie’s, get take-out ice cream, and bring it back to the restaurant to eat.
It was rather amusing to see folks sitting in one ice cream place eating ice cream from another ice cream place!

I miss the Cape Cod. It was a great place to go for lunch for a burger and fries and then, of course, an ice cream for dessert.

Looks like I might have to take a drive out to Marlborough for some pizza one day. I’m glad to hear Makka’s Pizza is still around. I actually worked in Lechmere one summer and used to each lunch there all the time.
Now if only I could find a Cookies Cookin’! I was also thinking it was a chain because I think there might have been one in the Cambridge Side Galleria at one point. But I Googled the name and I think maybe the whole chain shut down because I can’t find anything.

My ex-boyfriend worked at Chess King across the hall from Cookies Cookin’. Good times…

I have been wondering about Cookies Cookin’ too. They were the best cookies ever and none compare to the peanut butter nuget ones. I would be happy to at least have a recipe to try and duplicate the ones they made there. If anyone ever finds out where they went or they find the recipe I would love to know!

Herbie’s was great, my brother worked there when he was 14. It moved to Sudbury for a while but didn’t quite make it. I heard that Rick the owner had a problem with the white stuff.

Herbie’s actually started in downtown Framingham in the early 80’s, I don’t remember the exact location, but it was a lot like Steve’s back in the day.
Herbies had a great mural on the wall with the Penguins. They had the BEST chocolate ice cream, I still have never been able to find its equal.
