The Tavern

August 18th, 2009

My friend Mike and I went to check out “The Tavern” (formerly Connery’s) at 102 Irving Street.
Inside looked similar to when it was Connery’s but cleaner.

We were greeted by the bartender/owner and chatted with him a bit and then got a couples of beers and ordered some food.
Mike got a cheeseburger, which he said was really good, the only thing he’s ask for is that they serve fries but they only have bagged chips:

I got a mushroom pizza, which I thought was pretty good,  especially for a non-pizzeria pizza.

What I really like about this place is that the owner has another room you can bring your food into to eat, play pool and darts.

Some nights are designated as game nights for texas hold’em or board games. Mondays are movie night, where you can watch that week’s featured film and a large screen and Saturdays are Karaoke night.
I really like how the owner wants to make the Tavern a place to go and feel comfortable and have fun. Check out their site for more information: http://www.thetavernframingham.com/index.php

  1. The big perceptual problem with Connery’s (now the Tavern)was (is) its location and the assumption I always made — right or wrong — that the clientele hanging around waiting to go inside seemed, well, a bit sketchy.
I ask: Who frequents this joint? Is it safe, sleazy, down home, young crowd, old crowd, down and out, biker bar, eclectic? Obviously the place can survive in that location, but let’s face it: not the nicest slice of downtown.

  2. While Connery’s had the perception of being a shady place, and rightfully so, The Tavern is far from anything Connery’s used to be. The new owner is doing great things with that bar. He’s done a great job keeping the riff raff out and making the place feel like a nice safe neighborhood bar. There is also all sorts of entertainment including live music, pool and dart leagues, and a free Texas Hold’em poker league. They have a very nice menu with some really unique and tasty stuff including their signature “Tavern” burger. The crowd there is an ecclectic mix of people from young to old and nobody ever feels out of place in there. It’s a great bar with a great vibe and a great new owner. Definitely check it out. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

  3. Well, unfortunately, the Tavern’s not going to be helped by today’s front page story about the homeless woman that was arrested there for throwing her teeth. It’s too bad, but unfortunately, the Tavern is definitely not helped by their area.
